“I’d rather lose in a virtuous cause than win in a corrupt one.” Paraphrasing Woodrow Wilson
A little cris de coeur for Nikki Haley . . .
A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group from within, usually in favor of another group. Nikki Haley and most of her supporters are the GOP’s fifth column, she’s firmly within the GOP universe, yet firmly opposed to Donald Trump who is the GOP. And this helps Joe Biden and Democrats, which may not be Haley’s aim, but it is a fact. That’s why she ought to stay in the GOP primaries (and beyond) as a continuing threat to Trump. This is a war beyond Nikki Haley’s future political goals, and she runs the risk of losing everything, particularly via MAGA retribution. But, now, we need courageous deeds, people who would rather lose in a virtuous cause than win in a corrupt one.
Haley recently lost the South Carolina GOP primary, true, but she pulled in nearly 40%, a very meaningful number of Trump defectors made that happen, especially since Trump acts as if he’s unified the party. So many Haley supporters will not vote for him that any close election will hinge on those disaffected Republican voters. The video below is well worth your nine minutes of time. Note especially, at 7:30 minutes, when Lawrence O’Donnell suggests to an irritatingly amused bunch of other MSNBC cynics, that Nikki Haley is possibly staying the course as Trump’s fifth column because “It just might be the right thing to do.” Lawrence got some soul. And Joy Reid nails it at the end! Nikki Haley faces impossible odds, and can expect pretty rough treatment. Nevertheless, she’s doing – and hopefully will continue to do – the right thing all the way into November.
